Ian Fleming's Dr No - Dated with Sytle I REVIEW

Ian Fleming's Dr No - Dated with Sytle I REVIEW

12/5/2024

Holy fuck was this cheesy, but in the styliest way a movie can be.

Dr No is a dashing mixed bag of interesting high effort and what could be described as that decade's junk disposable entertainment.

Some of the gun-shooting effects were disgusting. Just two stupid separate shots poorly glued together. The whole “dragon” part was absolutely retarded. As it was how the electrified ventilation duct was so easily trespasable since the bad guys left him with his fucking shoes. That fake blood was insulting. And yeah the black guys being the bad goons simply would never be filmed today.

It can be unbelievably cheesy or goofy at moments, outright laugh out loud, and definetly contains some datedness, but i personally find that fascinating to watch because it serves as a time capsule.

The music was also cheesy as fuck, yet nonetheless another thing made interesting due to its styled antique. Surprisingly playful at points.

It was really funny how the music cheesily faded in and out when they first introduced James Bond. It was like seeing the caveman version of today's marvel fanservice and play around with the motiff the entire time. In a way thats what this whole movie is supposed to be, a direct marvel generacional parallel, what best window into the past culture could you ask for?

All in all, nevermind the vast amount of source material in the form of novels, I can clearly see why someone would be very passionate about this or why even some really money hungry producers could see some franchise potential in here.

The casino, the smoking gentlemen, just the rich douchebag aesthetic. The action, the scale and grandiosity of this hero story, the seduction play, the caveman fanservice. There is a certain wit to the way characters speak and conduct themselves. Very romantic. its got it all to be really appealing to some.

In fact i think this is exactly what boomers mean when they say the ways of courtesy and gentledom have been lost. Surely even newer generatios have to learn something from Dr. No, why the hell not?

I found the story to be quite riveting as well, a comfortable middle point between hardcore intricacy and just easy enough for all to follow. It was very nice to see all the different scenographies they prepared… Yet the entire time i cant but see it as the jumping point this has been for our modern action movies. If this was made today, it would contain a whole lot more explosions and car chases. Id like to note just how roided up everything has to be in America. The public demanded ever crazier stunts, ever bigger action… Yet never more story complexity. Curious.

I also found the titular villain, Dr No, to be pretty enjoyable, i loved the way his lines were written and how his scenes were stylized. He really leaves an impression on the film and made me understand that “why do we like bad guys?” sentiment. And a roast that was thrown at him got some liberal laughs out of me: “with your disregard for human life, means you must be working for the East.”

5.5/10
